''Thysanoteuthis rhombus'', also known as the diamond squid or diamondback squid, is a large species of squid growing to 100 cm in mantle length〔Roper C.F.E., M.J. Sweeney & C.E. Nauen 1984. ''Cephalopods of the world''. Food and Agriculture Organization, Rome, Italy.〕 and a maximum weight of 30 kg,〔Miyahara, K., K. Fukui, T. Ota & T. Minami 2006. Laboratory observations on the early life stages of the diamond squid ''Thysanoteuthis rhombus''. ''Journal of Molluscan Studies'' 72(2): 199–205. 〕 although it averages around 20 kg.〔Butler, L.-A. 2010. (Enormous squid not chokka ). ''Weekend Post'', 27 May 2010.〕 The species occurs worldwide, throughout tropical and subtropical waters. Arms have two series of suckers, whereas the tentacular clubs have four. It lacks photophores. ''T. rhombus'' is named for its fins, which run in equal length along the mantle, giving the appearance of a rhombus. The species is commercially fished in Japan, specifically in the Sea of Japan and Okinawa.〔Bower, John R. and K. Miyahara. 2005.
